Making modal verbs negative

It's very easy to make modal verbs negative. You use kein, nicht or any other negative adverb as you would in a sentence without a modal verb.

  • abends (adv) – in the evening
  • der Alkohol (m) – alcohol
  • ankommen (v) – to arrive
  • nie (adv) – never
  • rauchen (v) – to smoke

  • Sie kann nicht schwimmen.
  • Ich will nicht ins Kino gehen.
