Over the last forty years, 20 per cent of the Amazon basin has been cleared for a number of reasons, some of which are listed in the diagram below.

These benefits, however, come at a cost. Clearing the rainforest threatens the survival of many plant and animal species and can lead to serious environmental degradation.

Widespread deforestation damages the whole biosphere (the balance of living and non-living things) with serious longterm consequences.
