The first time your child comes back from school with proper, bonafide homework can be a daunting moment, leaving you with a lot of questions. How often are they going to be set homework? How much are you, as a parent, supposed to help? How are you meant to make sure your child completes it?

Well, take a breath and join Sophie, aka Tired 'N Tested, as she explains some tips and tricks to help you help your child during those first months.

Sophie's tips

• Understand the school's homework policy

This will include how much time your child is expected to spend doing their homework each day or week. Knowing this will be valuable as you help them manage their workload.

• Talk to your child and their teachers as much as you can

Be reassuring, be curious, be helpful, and, most of all, be patient when your child makes fun of you for getting a basic maths question wrong. Remember to stay in the loop with teachers and their plans too!

• Keep a regular homework schedule and sign their diaries

Find consistent time slots for study each day or week - your child can have input in these decisions, but make sure they know their schedule once it's set and stick to it! As for homework diaries, they're the perfect place to communicate with your child's teacher, so use them to relay any concerns you or your child might have.
